CSU East Bay reports interim results on Information Literacy for Human Development students

Project leader Lori Townsend met with the Human Development department at the beginning of the Fall Quarter to discuss the goals for the project.  She then met individually with department faculty in order to gain a better understanding of the teaching methods used in both online and in-person courses within the department.

She also worked with the incoming online major cohort of adult students during their orientation to the campus. After these meetings, it became clear that students would need to focus on more than the upper-division Information Literacy objectives, but would also needa refresher on lower division IL objectives as well. The Human Development faculty is enthusiastic about the possibility of integrating online IL learning objects into their classes in Blackboard to help prepare students for their senior capstone projects.

 

The first draft of the curriculum map was completed and Lori Townsend began working with the software needed to build interactive modules, including Camtasia & Captivate.  She also began examining digital learning objects already built by other libraries, especially those in Australia & New Zealand, for possible re-use in the program.  In line with the goals for the project, the CSUEB library is also developing modules for general use among all campus faculty.  Kyzyl Fenno-Smith, a team member, is working with Stephanie Braisley on the Information Literacy Initiative at the Chancellor's Office, which will hopefully result in systemwide digital learning objects. 

  

This project has also inspired a few members of the library faculty to redesign their sections of LIBY 1210 - a 2-unit required course for first year students.  It is expected that the online modules completed for the 1210 redesign will contribute to and possibly overlap with the work of this grant.  The faculty members involved in the LIBY 1210 course redesign are excited to both strengthen the IL curriculum and decrease the amount of time spent on the course!  The development of this online course is the direct result of the work on the grant (as well as initial work begun by other library faculty members on a potential NCAT project).
